Temperature for the first 3 times of use

First time use:

The Bastard is a kamado grill made of high-quality cordorite ceramic. Our advice is not to heat your kamado higher than 200 degrees the first 3 times before using it, to prevent damage to the ceramics. This takes some patience and control. How do you do that? We are happy to explain it to you!

1st time use:

  • Fill the coal basket/firebox halfway with coal. Do you have a coal basket with a divider?
  • Then remove it.
  • Light the coals in 1 place in the middle of the coals. Do not light it in several places at the same time, as this will cause the temperature to rise too quickly.
  • You can use the one minute lighter to light the coals.

Slowly bring the temperature to 100 to 120 degrees. Tip: also use the plate setter. This ensures that the temperature rises more slowly, and it will also take longer to cool down your kamado. In this step, open the air slide in your base all the way and open the top cap only slightly.

Has your kamado reached 100 degrees? Then close the air slide in the base until it is only a quarter open.

Try to maintain this temperature for 2 hours. Is the temperature too low? Then slide the air slide open a little bit further. If the temperature rises correctly, close the air slide more.

After 2 hours you can start using the kamado and open the air slide further so that the temperature rises further to 200 degrees.

2nd time use:

  • Fill the coal basket/fire box three quarters full with coal.
  • Light the coals in 1 place in the middle of the coals.
  • Slowly raise the temperature to 150 degrees.
  • Open the air slide in your base all the way and open the top cap just a little bit.
  • Has your kamado reached 150 degrees? Then close the air slide in the base until it is only a quarter open.
  • Try to maintain this temperature for 2 hours.

After 2 hours you can start using the kamado and open the air slide further so that the temperature rises further to 200 degrees.

3rd time use:

When using your kamado for the 3rd time, follow the same steps as for the 2nd use.

Good to know: The height of the temperature is very dependent on the amount of oxygen and other conditions such as wind, humidity, type of coal and the outside temperature. Controlling the temperature is therefore almost never 100% the same.
