Important! The Bastard is a cordierite ceramic kamado. The ceramic has to get used to the high temperatures. We recommend that you do not heat the first 3x The Bastard higher than 200 degrees Celsius.
Also make sure that you let the temperature rise as slowly as possible, especially if the weather is cold and/or humid. This allows the ceramic to take effect and prevents cracks and/or cracking of the ceramic.
Slowly heat The Bastard the first 3 times to a maximum of 225-250 degrees Celsius. The more places you create focal points, the faster it goes..
So watch out for this! Close the dome in time to avoid the temperature getting too high.
The Bastard is a ceramic barbecue and it is always fired on charcoal. Use good quality charcoal with large chunks so that The Bastard doesn't get suffocated. Fill it up to the brim of the firebox.
Preferably light the charcoal with a lighter, such as the 'one minute lighter'. You can also use firelighters, but only if they are made of natural material. Never use chemical firelighters, spirits or other liquid!
ATTENTION TO AVOID A STICK FLAME
The Bastard can of course get very hot. If you suddenly open the lid, a
flash fire. Therefore, always use barbecue gloves! When you lift the lid, do so a little bit first and with an extended arm. This allows oxygen to reach the fire first and prevents a flash fire.
MASTER THE FIRE
It is important that you gently heat The Bastard to 225-250 degrees Celsius the first 3 times you use it. The Bastard’s strength is that you can keep the temperature very stable. With little effort, you can maintain the temperature at 80-90°C for up to 12 hours. Or you can easily raise the temperature to 250°C.
You can control the temperature with the Precision top and the air inlet. The more air you allow into The Bastard, the more the temperature will rise. This means that closing the air inlet and the Precision top will lower the temperature.
TIP: Always use a plate setter for slow cooking at a low temperature. Do not let the grill get too hot. It takes hours to bring the temperature down.
